What is Accessibility and Why Do I Need it?

Web Accessibility means that your website can be used by anyone — no matter their impairment or how they use the internet.

Did you know that blind users utilize screen readers to access website content, or that some fonts are easier to read than others for people with Dyslexia? Often, these users are left behind when it comes to a site's web design, but it is important to think about the user experience for those that require accommodations such as needing to increase text size or navigating a website using a keyboard. Around 20% of users on the web today require accommodations to use your website, which means that up to 20% of your traffic won't have the best experience with your website if it is not ADA-compliant.

What does that mean for you?

A poor user experience can not only cause people to leave your site, but it can also contribute to a negative view of your brand as a whole. In terms of usability, a site that alienates a fifth of its total traffic is setting itself up for failure. Even if the user doesn't leave your site immediately, a dissatisfying user experience makes it very unlikely they will return. You may not notice the effects in the short term, but the loss of repeat customers will have largely negative repercussions in the long run. Overall, ignoring website accessibility can have implications regarding lawsuits, your customer base, and your business' SEO.

3 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE AN ACCESSIBLE WEBSITE
Lawsuits

If your website is not ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990) compliant you are open to a massively damaging lawsuit. In 2020, over 3000 lawsuits were filed related to web accessibility, which was a near 23% increase from 2019. That's 3000+ business owners that had to deal with the stress of hiring an attorney and paying legal fees because of a totally preventable situation.

Increased Audience

Without a website that is currently user-friendly to those that need accommodations, you are missing out on opportunities to serve your potential clients well. Adding our widget allows for you to thrill and give a good experience to anyone that lands on your website!

SEO

Search Engine Optimization is setting up your website in a way so that it can be found more easily on search engines — part of that process is making your website accessible to all users. Search engines love when businesses give users good experiences and will reward you by ranking your website over other websites. Conversely, search engines will punish websites that provide a bad user experience, which is what you're doing if you ignore website accessibility.

Common Misconceptions

1) Online users that require accommodations aren't a significant portion of website traffic

  • 20% of the users on the web today require some sort of accommodation to use your website.

2) An accessible website is a boring website

  • In previous years websites had to be boring and simple, but not anymore! Even our most custom websites can incorporate the accessibility widget.

3) An accessible website is expensive!

  • Truth be told, the accessibility widget is a small price to pay for the protection it provides against costly compliance lawsuits. We like to think of our widget as an insurance plan—an umbrella policy, if you will—saving you the expense of having to pay thousands of dollars for legal fees if someone were to sue your company!

  • Typically, you would have to hire an employee to keep up with making sure your site is always accessible to impaired users but this widget allows you to do that at the fraction of the cost and time that would be required from manual mitigation by an employee!

Our Accessibility Widget
automatically Adds Image Alt Tags

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) powered image recognition will automatically provide you with accurate image alts tags and descriptions of non-text content for those users relying on screen readers. You always have the ability to approve or modify the description so that you are 100% certain about the content being put out on your website. Save hours of work with the help of this single feature!

automatically Makes All Elements Interactive

Our widget will take any features on your website that aren't naturally compatible with mouse or keyboard handlers and make it so that they become fully focusable and accessible with keyboard navigation and other assistive technologies.

automatically Fixes Broken Links

Our widget will fix any link on your website that leads to a non-existant page or browser error by making it inactive on the page. This will give each user a better experience while simultaneously helping your search engine optimization!
